Dr. James E Wilson

Dr. James E. Wilson, 82, died June 30, 2022 at Summa Health surrounded by his loving wife and family, following a brief illness.

He was born September 25, 1939 to the late Helen and Earl Wilson.

Jim graduated from Shadyside HS, Kent State University, and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Upon completion of a residency in Internal Medicine at Akron General Medical Center (AGMC), he entered private practice before transitioning to Emergency Medicine for the next 26 years. He was instrumental in the development of the ER residency program and Emergency Department at AGMC. In 1979, he assumed the Chairmanship of the Emergency Department at Akron City Hospital and served in that role until his retirement in 1999. He thoroughly enjoyed mentoring both medical students and residents in the art of Emergency Medicine. He was also actively involved in academia. He was one of the founding members for the development of the written and oral board examinations in Emergency Medicine and served as an examiner for the oral boards. He was involved with the medical curriculum at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and served as the Chairman for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He was also an accomplished researcher having authored numerous publications and presented many of these articles at research symposiums.

After his retirement in 1999, Jim volunteered for 25 yrs. at Open M Medical Clinic. He was an active Member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for over 50 yrs. singing in the choir, playing his trumpet, and serving on Church Council.

He loved family time which included golfing with the boys, attending his grandchildren’s athletic events (especially soccer), building model airplanes with his son, and anything else that brought the family together.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Kay; children, Jackie (Tom) Brennan and Jim (Tami) Wilson; beloved grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah), Sarah, Christopher and Daniel Brennan, Miah, Coen, and Evan Wilson; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan and Aiden Brennan, who dearly loved their Papa.

Calling hours will be from 12-2 P.M. with funeral service immediately following at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, July 8. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 50 N. Prospect St., Akron, OH 44304. Graveside services and burial at Holly Memorial Gardens.
